Royal Philips Electronics announced it has entered into an agreement with leading Korean electronics manufacturer Hyunwoo McPlus, aimed at bringing new, Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS)-enabled HDTVs to market. Under the agreement, Philips will supply engines based on its single-panel LCoS technology -- engazeô -- which Hyunwoo McPlus will integrate into its new 52-inch rear-projection HDTVs. Matt Medeiros, Philips Components' President and CEO, noted, ""The commercialization of this technology by Hyunwoo McPlus signals this customer's confidence in Philips' technology, and will extend our reach among today's home entertainment enthusiasts. Complementing our cutting-edge display portfolio, our LCoS technology will help customers like Hyunwoo McPlus bring to market some of the most advanced and exciting products available -- while solidly positioning us to capture a significant share of the LCoS market as it continues to gain acceptance."" According to H.K. Choi, President of Hyunwoo McPlus, ""There's a clear opportunity to reach consumers who have rejected large display units based on other display technologies because they don't offer sufficient picture quality or performance for the investment. Our goal is to enable these consumers to experience HDTV-quality resolution at an affordable price -- our relationship with Philips will help make this possible,"" said Choi. Hyunwoo McPlus will begin mass production of LCoS rear-projection HDTVs in the third quarter of 2002, with the key electronics modules for HDTV to be provided by Prochips, Hyunwoo McPlus' sister company. Hyunwoo McPlus plans to bring its LCoS-based HDTVs to market by October 2002, making the units available through the company's worldwide distribution channels. The company estimates that by 2004, the bill of materials for a display product based on Philips' LCoS technology will be comparable to that of a similar product based on CRT technology. Moreover, it anticipates that its LCoS-based HDTVs will offer superior image quality at a fraction of the CRT weight and footprint. Hyunwoo McPlus' new 52-inch, 16:9 HDTV offers a resolution of 1280 x 720, and with Philips' UHPô lamp, will generate a brightness of over 500 cd/m2 and contrast ratio of over 400:1.
