Zenith Aggressively Repositions Plasma Display Panels

3-Jul-02

Zenith Electronics Corporation has introduced a new, higher brightness, high contrast 60-inch HDTV plasma display panel (PDP) at a breakthrough price, the first 60-inch PDP with a suggested price under $15,000. Announced earlier this year at a suggested price of $20,000, the 60-inch PDP model P60W26 is now available at a suggested price of $14,999. Zenith also has repositioned the other models in its 2002 PDP line, including the new 50-inch P50W26 16:9 HDTV monitor, the 42-inch P42W22B 16:9 EDTV (enhanced-definition television) monitor, and the 40-inch P40V22 4:3 EDTV monitor. The P50W26, available in August, will carry a new suggested price of $10,999 (reduced from $12,000). The P42W22B and P40V22, available now, both carry suggested prices of $4,999 (reduced from $6,000). The P60W26 HDTV monitor features a high 1280 x 720 resolution capability from a broad range of inputs that include component, composite, S-video, and RGB (VGA, SVGA, XGA, and SXGA). The display achieves a contrast ratio of 550:1, while an internal Faroudja/Sage scaler provides Intelligent Image Scaling. When used with a computer, a picture-in-picture mode keeps the TV image available in an inset box. Built-in aspect ratio correction allows the intelligent resizing of video and computer images to 16:9 widescreen or conventional 4:3 formats. The new P50W26 50-inch HDTV monitor, which will be available in August, boasts a resolution capability of 1366 x 768 and a contrast ratio of 600:1. Multiple interfaces include control/RGB, component video, audio in/out, composite, RGB (15-pin D-sub), S-Video, and RS-232C. Zenith's P42W22B EDTV monitor features a fan-free 42-inch display, designed to deliver a 852 x 480 picture at a more affordable price. Features include an internal Faroudja/Sage scaler, built-in aspect ratio correction, RS-232 controls, and a rated contrast ratio of 650:1. The 40-inch P40V22 4:3 EDTV monitor features 640 x 480 resolution, and a contrast ratio of 700:1. Like Zenith's other models, key features include built-in aspect ratio correction, and composite, component and RGB (VGA and SVGA) connections. All can be mounted on an optional tabletop pedestal. Wall mounting hardware, optional speakers, and speaker stands also are available.
