SMART Devices, Inc. has released the MM1, a new accessory product for home theatre systems that allows owners of premium home theatre systems to derive enjoyment from their systems when listening to two-channel music recordings. The outputs connect to the 6-channel inputs of a home theatre surround processor or receiver. The 5.1 analog matrix uses the patented Circle SurroundÆ matrix circuits to enhance the ""phantom"" channel in music recordings, without the ""tearing"" or channel shifting that may be present in other matrix schemes. The model MM1 connects to the analog outputs of a DVD or CD player, and processes the signals to produce a full 5.1-channel music playback. The center channel is in a soft steering mode. If film playback is desired, a button on the front panel of the product changes to hard steering for the center channel. The unit also decodes surround information contained on many music CD releases. The universal design works with virtually any home theatre system that has auxiliary multichannel audio inputs. Level trim pots on the rear of the unit allow for precise channel balance and matching, plus bass management. The MM1 has a suggested price of $249.
