May DTV Unit And Dollar Sales Increase While Prices Continue To Decline

12-Jul-02

Bringing the year-to-date unit sales of digital television (DTV) products to more than 700,000 units, May 2002 DTV unit sales reached 152,008, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). CEA routinely tracks and reports factory-to-dealer DTV sales and classifies DTV products as integrated sets and monitors displaying active vertical scanning lines of at least 480p and, in the case of integrated sets, receiving and decoding ATSC terrestrial digital transmissions. CEA reported that May 2002 unit sales reflected an 81 percent increase, compared to the same period in 2001. May 2002 dollar sales totaled $242,955,716, representing a 63 percent increase compared to May 2001, despite the fact that the average selling price now is $1,598 -- nearly $200 less than last year. ""With May DTV unit sales in hand, we are at the doorstep of another milestone in the DTV transition,"" said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. ""Total unit sales since product introduction now stand at 2.95 million. And just last spring we announced the one-millionth DTV product sold. DTV is a winner with consumers continuing to buy these products in droves month after month."" CEA projects that 2.1 million DTV products -- including integrated sets and displays -- will be sold in 2002, 4 million in 2003, 5.4 million in 2004, 8 million in 2005, and 10.5 million in 2006.
