Samsung Launches Two New Over-The-Air DTV Set-Top Boxes

19-Jul-02

Samsung has introduced two new models to its over-the-air digital (ATSC) set-top box line, the SIR-T151 and the SIR-T165. Available at $499 (MSRP), the SIR-T151 offers access to over-the-air DTV, while the step-up SIR-T165 ($799 MSRP) adds FireWire (IEEE 1394) and DVI (Digital Video Interface) connections. Both models are able to output all DTV native resolutions (1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i) through a selectable output. They have the capability to tune and decode all 18 approved ATSC DTV broadcast formats and DolbyÆ Digital DTV broadcasts (5.1 channels). Other features include support for favorite channel and closed caption functions, an on-screen menu system, and a universal remote control. Chris Cudina, Senior Marketing Manager for Samsung's Digital Set Top Box Group stated, ""As the 2006 FCC deadline for networks to offer digital broadcasting approaches, Samsung offers the consumer an array of set-top boxes to meet their DTV needs. We are excited to be among the first to integrate DVI and FireWire connections with our SIR-T165, and to make DTV an affordable option for everyone by offering our SIR-T151 at a sub-$500 price point."" These models are among the few set top boxes that output a 720p picture. The set-top boxes offer control over aspect ratio while in 480p and 480i modes. Output connections are selectable: 15-pin D-sub or via component video (YpbPr) connections. There is also simultaneous NTSC 480i output. Additionally, when 480i is selected, the menu OSD is activated for connecting to an analog TV. The SIR-T151 is currently available, while the SIR-T165 will be shipping in August.
