Kenwood Features Cinema EQ Audio, Progressive Scan DVD In 2002 Packaged Home Theatre Systems

29-Jul-02

Kenwood USA Corporation introduced its 2002 line of home-theatre-in-a-box entertainment systems, featuring five models, all equipped with ""Cinema EQ"" processing, claimed to improve the playback of music and movie soundtracks through small home speaker systems. The two step-up systems include a Kenwood five-disc DVD changer with MP3 audio playback and progressive scan video output. Every system includes all interconnecting cables, color-coded speaker wires, and an illustrated ""Quick Start"" guide. Four of the five 2002 systems feature speakers based on a two-way, twin woofer design. All five systems, priced between $300 and $700, offer 100 watts x 6 channels (with the sixth amplifier channel located either in the receiver or in the subwoofer), and are packaged with a Kenwood A/V receiver featuring six-channel analog audio input, as well as DolbyÆ Digital, DTSÆ, and Dolby Pro Logic II. All but the entry level system offer S-video switching. ""Consumers like the convenience and comfort level of the one-box home theatre system,"" said Brian Towne, Director of Product Development for Kenwood USA Corporation. ""Kenwood home theatre packages have been known for best-in-class audio performance, yet we've improved this year's line further, while keeping systems at the same price points as last year. Significantly improved speakers, including two-way surrounds, coupled with Cinema EQ technology individually tailored to each speaker package, guarantees audio performance second to none at each price point."" All of the 2002 systems feature Kenwood's Cinema EQ circuitry. Using a variety of equalization and filter techniques, Cinema EQ is said to overcome the low frequency limitations that plague all small speakers and cause a mismatch between the speakers and subwoofer in the upper-bass/lower-midrange. The HTB-405, HTB-505, HTB-705DV, and HTB-805DV also feature a new Active Equalization circuit, which builds on Cinema EQ by adding a three-band parametric-style EQ circuit that works across the entire frequency spectrum. This tailors the response of the electronics to the specific speaker package in each system. The line-leading system is the HTB-805DV. Its primary components are the Kenwood Model DV-605 five-disc DVD changer, and the Kenwood VR-606 A/V receiver. The HTB-805DV is packaged with an IR remote that provides joystick control for on-screen DVD and satellite tuner menus. The speaker package consists of five two-way speakers for main and surround channels, plus an 8-inch subwoofer with a 100-watt amplifier. The left, right, and center channel speakers incorporate dual 4-inch woofers and a ""super-tweeter"" that extends high-frequency response to 40 kHz. The two surround speakers have been upgraded to a two-way design using the same 4-inch woofer and super-tweeter. All five speaker cabinets are made from wood and feature a black ash finish, with the left, right, and center speaker using a full-size bookshelf design and the surrounds designed with a smaller cabinet. The HTB-705DV features the same five-disc DVD changer (model DV-605) found in the HTB-805DV system. It employs Kenwood's VR-616 receiver, which provides 100 watts into each of six channels, including a dedicated 100 watt amplifier to power the subwoofer. The receiver, with built-in Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II processing, provides S-video inputs and is equipped with Cinema EQ and Active Equalization technology. An A/V preset remote with joystick menu control is also provided. All five speakers share an identical two-way design, with twin 3-inch woofers and a dome tweeter. A separate 8-inch subwoofer is driven by a dedicated amplifier channel in the receiver. The HTB-505 offers the same Kenwood A/V receiver, remote control, and speaker package as the HTB-805DV, but without the Kenwood DVD changer. The HTB-405 employs the same receiver as the HTB-705DV, as well as the same remote control and loudspeaker package, but without a DVD changer. The HTB-205 is Kenwood' entry-level package. It employs the new 100 watts x 6 VR-615 A/V receiver, which offers Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Cinema EQ processing. The speaker package consists of five speakers with 3-inch woofers and an 8-inch subwoofer powered by the receiver's dedicated subwoofer amplifier. A Kenwood system remote control is also provided. Suggested Retail Pricing HTB-805DV, $700 HTB-705DV, $600 HTB-505, $500 HTB-405, $400 HTB-205, $300
