Sales Of Digital Video Products Continue To Dominate During July

28-Aug-02

As the transition from analog to digital formats maintains momentum, manufacturer-to-dealer sales of digital video products, including DVD players and camcorders, continued to post significant gains during the month of July, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). Factory-to-dealer sales of DVD players reached 890,417 units -- an increase of more than 28 percent for the month, compared to the same period during 2001. Similarly, manufacturer-to-dealer sales of camcorders grew by more than 21 percent for the month to 353,493 units. Year-to-date unit sales also are on the rise, with DVD player sales up more than 41 percent over 2001 to 7,211,650 units. Sales of DVD players are well above initial projections for the year. CEA originally forecasted an increase of 25 percent over year-end totals for 2001, but impressive sales in 2002 already have boosted projections to a gain of nearly 40 percent by year-end. ""Consumers are enthusiastically participating in the transition to digital video and the long-term outlook is very strong,"" said Sean Wargo, Senior Industry Analyst for the CEA. ""Despite consumer concerns about the economy, interest in video is still very high and strong sales of digital video products -- including DVD, digital camcorders and DTV products -- are proof that the industry will post solid growth in the long run."" Last month, CEA released figures stating manufacturer-to-dealer sales of digital television (DTV) products (which include monitors and integrated displays) skyrocketed during the month of June with more than $294 million in sales, representing an increase of nearly 85 percent.
