Faroudja Introduces HD Plasma Display Packages

9-Oct-02

Faroudja, a division of Genesis Microchip, Inc. (NASDAQ: GNSS), has introduced two new Faroudja High-Definition Plasma Display Packages at CEDIA EXPO 2002. The Plasma Display Packages combine a 61-inch and a 42-inch high-definition widescreen plasma display monitor with Faroudja's Digital Cinema Source (NRS-DCS) Processor or new Native Rate Series-DVI Digital Video (NRS-DVI) Processor/Scaler. Both plasma monitors are optimized for use with either the NRS-DCS or new NRS-DVI processor with a variety of sources, including HDTV, DVD, computer graphics, and standard-definition TV. The monitors have a slim four-inch depth. The larger of the two Faroudja Plasma Display Packages features a 61-inch screen with 1365 x 768 native resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. Features include Advanced Mass Area Sampling to straighten diagonal lines and reproduce curved lines more smoothly, built-in phosphor protection, and a brightness limiter. A scan converter with a conversion process for signals up to UXGA is included for computer sources. Advanced display features also include a digital 9x zoom and several split-screen options for simultaneous displays of multiple sources. Split-screen also allows the display of 1024 x 768 XGA sources in their standard 4:3 aspect ratio. An internal 7-watt stereo audio amplifier, external speaker jacks, and optional external speakers that can attach to the sides of the monitor provide basic audio capabilities. The 42-inch Faroudja Plasma Display Package features a 1024 x 768 native resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio. There is 3x digital zoom and the same proprietary technology as the 61-inch model for image quality. The 42-inch package displays signals from a variety of input sources, including all major HDTV and conventional video formats, and is compatible with computer graphics resolutions from VGA to UXGA, as well as 848 x 480 and 1365 x 768. The input panel offers connections for up to eight different sources, including a 29-pin DVI digital input and three assignable audio inputs. Each Faroudja Plasma Display Package includes either an NRS-DCS processor or NRS-DVI processor. NRS-DCS processors include an internal high-performance DVD transport, making it possible to send a digital video signal straight to the video processing stage. The NRS-DVI is an upgraded version of Faroudja's classic Native Rate Series processor, equipped with DVI inputs and outputs for pass-through processing, enabling the plasma display to benefit from a digital signal.
