PSB Introduces Platinum Series Mini-Monitor

9-Oct-02

PSB Speakers has introduced a new mini-monitor amongst the four Platinum Series speakers debuted at CEDIA EXPO 2002. The new M2 monitor is a two-way design, employing two new drivers: a 6-1/2-inch woofer and a one-inch, low-resonance (Fs) aluminum dome tweeter. The woofer uses a woven fiberglass cone, and is controlled by a 30-ounce magnet structure. The tweeter employs a 16-ounce magnet structure, and its voice coil is immersed in low-viscosity Ferrofluidô. According to PSB founder and Chief Designer, Paul Barton, ""Nothing beats a really good mini-monitor for avoiding diffraction effects, and when you combine that with a low-resonance tweeter that will go out to 40 kHz with wide dispersion, you get high-frequency definition that's just amazing--perfect for today's very best playback media."" ""This speaker,"" Barton says, ""brings home the full potential of multichannel sound. You can use it both as a main speaker and a surround for perfect timbral matching from front to back, and what you get is all the ambiance and atmospherics that Hollywood engineers manage to get onto movie soundtracks. That also holds true when you use the M2 simply as the surround pair with our T8 towers in front. But the listener who simply sticks to M2s front and rear, and combines them with one of our subwoofers, can get a stunning amount of very wide-range sound without visually dominating a small or crowded listening/viewing space."" Finished in black ash or cherry wood veneers, with cast-aluminum ends and side posts that bolster cabinet rigidity for low resonance, the M2 also has an aluminum-laminate baffle. The system's audiophile amenities include five-way, gold-plated binding posts and adjustable spikes and rubber levelers. Delivery is expected this fall with a target price of $2,000 per pair.
