PSB Speakers has introduced a new top-of-the line speaker, the Platinum T8, part of the company's new Platinum Series, at CEDIA EXPO 2002.The new T8 tower employs seven new drivers: three 8-inch woofers and two 4-1/2-inch midrange drivers (all with woven fiberglass cones and rubber surrounds), plus two 1-inch aluminum dome, low-resonance (Fs) tweeters. The tweeter also employs a 16-ounce magnet structure, and its voice coil is immersed in low-viscosity Ferrofluidô. One of the two tweeters faces forward, while the other (which can be disabled if not needed) radiates to the rear. The midrange drivers and the front tweeter are placed in a D'Appolito array. The system is magnetically shielded.According to PSB founder and Chief Designer, Paul Barton, ""We've been known for many years for our exceptional musicality,"" Barton says, ""and now you can also enjoy exceptional detail and transparency anywhere you're likely to sit. You get realism--superb definition of both music and effects--without a trace of edginess. Many high-end listeners have come to think that at least a slight edginess is the price you have to pay for ultimate musical detail, but the Platinum T8 proves otherwise once and for all. You get tremendous clarity and detail over an unusually wide seating area, and without a trace of listening fatigue.""The woven fiberglass cone woofers employ 40-ounce magnet structures and oversized rubber surrounds, resulting in rated bass extension down to 25 Hz. ""I don't think there is any bass event, in music or movie spectaculars, that these speakers won't render with complete justice,"" Barton says. ""These speakers 'rock,' and they also revel in handling anything from a row of double-basses to a row of dinosaurs on the move."" The T8's enclosure comes in black ash or cherry wood veneers, with cast-aluminum base, top, and side extrusions. The use of cast aluminum provides structural rigidity for low cabinet resonance. Audiophile amenities include five-way gold-plated binding posts (with a jumper for use of the rear tweeter), and adjustable spikes and rubber levelers.""Many critical listeners, including ourselves, have been waiting for this speaker,"" Barton says. ""It has to be seen and heard by anyone who wants ultimate performance.""Delivery is expected this fall with a target price of $6,500 per pair. For more information, visit www.psbspeakers.com.
