Yamaha Offers New 50-Inch Plasma Monitor

1-Nov-02

Yamaha Electronics Corporation has introduced the PDM-1, an 50-inch, 16:9 HD plasma monitor. The PDM-1 is claimed to address the limited reproduction of blacks and dark grays by plasma monitors. Three processing enhancements are employed--Yamaha's ""Natural Black"" drive system, which lowers overall black level by reducing the amount of pre-discharge at black levels; the Adaptive Brightness Enhancer, which expands the dynamic range between the deepest black and white peak levels in dark scenes; and the Adaptive Gamma Optimizer (10-bit), which produces over 1,000 gradations of black. To increase maximum light output level, the PDM-1 panel features an asymmetric cell structure that is said to improve the luminous efficiency of blue. According to Yamaha, increased blue capability allows full use of green capability, which is restricted with other designs. Further picture refinement is provided by high-quality phosphors and a special color filter in front of the panel. The PDM-1 features a pearl white frame, and can be wall-mounted (with optional PWK-150 brackets) or pedestal-mounted (with the optional PDS-150 stand). The PDM-1 includes 3:2 pulldown detection and a compensation circuit that is claimed to reduce artifacts and improve the picture quality of satellite and cable TV sources as well as video from non-progressive scan DVD players. The native resolution is 1366 x 768. Lower resolution sources are upconverted internally to 768p. A component/RGB (selectable) input and separate computer video (15-pin D-sub) input are included, along with S-video and composite video inputs. An RS-232 port allows for control of the PDM-1. The set also features built-in Cinema DSP audio. The PDM-1 has an MSRP of $13,000. For more information about Yamaha Electronics Corporation, visit www.yamaha.com/yec.
