Zenith Expands Family Of DVD Players, Changers, And DVD/VCR Combos

13-Jan-03

In its most aggressive approach to the DVD market, Zenith Electronics Corporation has launched an expanded line of DVD players with the introduction of seven new DVD players, DVD changers, and DVD/VCR combination models at the 2003 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The popularly priced new products--all featuring progressive scan--combine with currently available models to offer consumers nearly a dozen ways to participate in the rapidly growing DVD market, from entry-level single-disc players to sophisticated changers offering the latest audio options, such as DVD-Audio and SACD. Zenith DVD players also are available in eight compact home theatre systems that include surround sound speakers and receivers, which Zenith also is introducing at CES (see separate news release). Chief among Zenith's new DVD players are two five-disc progressive scan models, the DVB252 and the DVB357 DVD changers. Both feature MP3 decoding--as do all of Zenith's DVD players--and DVD-Audio capability, as well as component video and S-video outputs. The DVB357 is housed in Zenith's sleek new Super Slim chassis, only 2.7 inches high. Like Zenith's other DVD players, both are fully compatible with DVDs, CDs, and CD-R/CD-RW discs, and both JPEG and WMA files, and share digital audio outputs, 4x/16x movable zoom, and variable high-speed scan. Both models are expected to be available in the second quarter at suggested prices of $149 and $169, respectively. Zenith's new single-disc players include the DVB312, DVB317, and DVB318. All three models feature progressive scan and MP3 decoding; full compatibility with DVDs, CDs and CD-R/CD-RW discs, and JPEG and WMA files; and component and S-video outputs. The DVB312 is housed in Zenith's sleek 1.7-inch-high Super Slim chassis, while the DVB317 and DVB318 also include DVD-Audio capability, a variable-speed shuttle on the remote control, and digital audio outputs. The DVB318 also handles discs using the SACD format. The players are expected to be available in the second quarter at suggested prices under $100, $150, and $200, respectively. For the increasingly popular market in DVD/VCR combination players, Zenith introduced two new models, the XBV342 and XBV347. Both feature single-disc, progressive scan DVD players fully compatible with DVDs, CDs and CD-R/CD-RW, as well as JPEG and WMA files; MP3; DVD-Audio; and four-head hi-fi VCRs. A full array of video and audio outputs also is included. Both models are expected to be available in the second quarter at suggested prices of $179 and $199, respectively. Remaining in Zenith's expanded family of DVD products are two five-disc changers, the DVB251 at a suggested price of $129, and the DVD5591 with Dolby Digital, at a suggested price of $299; and the DVP7771 portable DVD player, featuring a 7-inch LCD screen, at a suggested price of $699.
