Final Sound Corporation announced that it has been awarded a major patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its ""modularly expandable electrostatic speaker system."" The unique modular configuration is the basis of Final's new line of lightweight, flat-panel electrostatic speakers designed for use with flat-screen TVs and home theatre systems. Final Sound is a pioneer in the development of advanced electrostatic audio speakers. ""This patent is the result of many years of research and development to free the speaker from its bulky electronics,"" said Maarten Smits, co-founder of Final Sound and inventor of the new modular speaker technology. ""It is an important event for Final Sound because it opens up a completely new and different way of designing top-quality home theatre audio. The speaker panels are truly flat and can be mounted as easily as a small picture frame and adjusted to create the perfect sound for the living space."" Each speaker panel consists of an ultra-thin Mylar film, sandwiched between two metal sheets, and held together on two sides by a lightweight, anodized aluminum frame. The weight of one panel can be as little as 6 pounds. The new system uses an exclusive central electronics unit (CEU) to house the audio electronics for up to six speaker panels, along with a specially designed power supply. This CEU unit is about the size of a standard audio receiver. Lightweight Speaker Design Results In Lower Cost To Manufacture The new modular approach has also enabled Final to achieve significant manufacturing efficiencies, resulting in lower prices at the retail level than comparable electrostatic speakers. The new Final speaker line includes five models: 20 inches, 28 inches, and 48 inches tall in the Home Theater Series; and 73 inches and 80 inches tall in the Reference Series. Suggested retail prices for 2003 begin at $999 per pair (US) for the 20-inch Model 90 panels and range as high as $19,999 per pair for the 80-inch Model 1400. The current line is available for immediate delivery from authorized Final Sound dealers in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. New models will be available for worldwide distribution in April.
