Consumer demand for digital video products, such as TV/DVD combinations, standalone DVD players, digital camcorders, and digital television (DTV) has infused new life into the category and led to dramatic increases in manufacturer-to-dealer sales of video products during April, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). Factory-to-dealer sales of TV/DVD combinations totaled 97,722 units for the month of April--an increase of some 386 percent compared to the same period in 2002. Sales of standalone DVD players increased by 16 percent to more than 1.27 million units for the month. In addition, digital camcorder sales totaled 531,840 units during April, up 10 percent over April 2002 figures. The increases in monthly sales have aided growth in year-to-date totals, with total factory-to-dealer sales for TV/DVD combination units reaching 339,099 units with 364 percent growth thus far in 2003. Year-to-date totals for standalone DVD players have increased 17 percent to more than 4.4 million units. In addition, digital camcorder year-to-date totals increased four percent, compared to the same period in 2002, to some 1.74 million units. ""Modest prices, vast product selection, and increased content and applications for digital video products are driving the digital transition to the delight of consumers across the country,"" said Sean Wargo, Senior Industry Analyst for CEA. ""We can expect the video category will maintain this growth as consumers continue to embrace new digital products with lower price points and added features.""
