CEA Partners With ITU To Ensure International Collaboration On CE Standards

9-Jun-03

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced that it is partnering with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to develop and enhance consumer electronics (CE) industry standards. Under the terms of the agreement, CEA has been named a qualified reference organization by the ITU's Telecommunications Standardization Sector (ITU-T). This designation establishes a collaborative relationship between the two organizations that allows them to share resources, expertise, and information to enhance international CE industry standards. ""ITU-T has a significant role to play in the future of consumer electronics, similar to the role we have already played in the development of standards for Internet connectivity,"" said Houlin Zhao, Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (secretariat for ITU-T). ""This relationship with CEA will allow us to push forward the work that both organizations are doing in the CE area. We believe strongly that a policy of cooperation with other standards development bodies is the most efficient way to create a fair and free market for businesses and consumers."" ""CEA is the venue of choice in North America to develop enabling standards for the CE industry,"" said Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of CEA. ""The accelerating pace of change in consumer technology forces efficiencies in standards setting and we have met that challenge with our domestic standards setting programs. This latest recognition by ITU provides us with an efficient way to take these standards to the international community for worldwide adoption, quickly and without duplication of efforts."" About The ITU The ITU, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is an international organization within the United Nations system where governments and the private sector coordinate global telecom networks and services. The ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) is one of the three sectors of the ITU. ITU-T's mission is to ensure an efficient and on-time production of high quality standards covering all fields of telecommunications. For more information about CEA, visit www.ce.org.
