McIntosh Laboratory Introduces The XRT28 Loudspeaker System

2-Jul-03

McIntosh Laboratory has introduced the XRT28 loudspeaker, the latest addition to the XR series of loudspeakers. The XRT28 is tall and slender, and by keeping the frontal area narrow, imaging is said to be improved and reflections off the front baffle are minimized. The XRT28 has a rated power handling of 1,200 watts. The XRT28 features two 10-inch extended excursion woofers and 20 4-inch extended excursion midrange that surround sixteen 1-inch soft dome tweeters. This driver configuration is claimed to limit early floor and ceiling reflections while producing a symmetrical horizontal polar response for optimized imaging. McIntosh says that by placing a column of midranges on each side of the center tweeter column, complete symmetry has been achieved, which, along with the wide dispersion inherent in the design of the drivers, allows for stereo imaging over a greater area of the room than previous designs. The new extruded aluminum enclosure is said to provide several benefits, including cabinet rigidity and greater internal volume due to the need for thinner walls than MDF. Sealed-back midranges and tweeters allow the entire height to be utilized for the woofer enclosure. The XRT28 are available at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $9,100 each. The XRT28 was introduced at the Home Entertainment 2003 show in San Francisco. For more information about McIntosh, visit www.mcintoshlabs.com.
