The DVD features all of the bandís music videos, as well as rare TV interviews and performances, and a previously unseen short film starring The Clash. The Essential Clash DVD arrived in stores June 17, 2003.Arriving just over twenty years after the original release of the British bandís 1982 U.S. hit singles ìRock The Casbahî and ìShould I Stay Or Should I Go?,î this DVD was personally supervised by the band, including Joe Strummer (vocals, guitar), who had been working on the project shortly before his death in London in December, 2002, at age 50. In March, surviving members Mick Jones (vocals, guitar), Paul Simonon (bass, vocals), and drummer Terry Chimes all traveled from London to NYC for The Clashís induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The members of The Clash were drawn together in 1976 and quickly found themselves at the forefront of Britainís then-burgeoning punk rock scene. Between 1976 and 1982, the group released five classic albums - The Clash, Give ëEm Enough Rope, London Calling, Sandinista! and Combat Rock - and toured the U.S. numerous times. The Clashís third album, London Calling, would later earn Rolling Stone magazineís endorsement as ìthe greatest album of the ë80s.îA highlight of The Essential Clash DVD is the debut appearance of the 50-minute short film entitled ìHell W10î (pronounced ìWest Ten,î that is the postal code for the area of West London in which The Clash lived at the time). Written and directed by Joe Strummer in 1983, ìHell W10î was a silent black & white movie, which starred the band members and their friends in a tale of drugs and gangsters in West London. Shortly after it was shot, the film went missing and only recently resurfaced at a flea market in London! All footage on The Essential Clash DVD has been digitally remastered and is now presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The Clash have one previous DVD in their discography, the documentary Westway To The World (Epic), which received a 2003 Grammy Award for the band and the filmís director, Don Letts.
