29-Jul-03

Sales of DVD products, including standalone DVD players and TV/DVD combination units, have continued to fuel growth in the video product category during May and June, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). Following trends already established this year, manufacturer-to-dealer sales of video products in May and June continued to increase at a rapid pace. Factory-to-dealer sales of TV/DVD combinations increased by 316 percent to more than 122,053 units during May, while sales of standalone DVD players were up more than 40 percent for the month, compared to the same period in 2002, with total sales of 1.33 million units. During the month of June, manufacturer-to-dealer sales of TV/DVD combinations totaled 195,152 units--an increase of 175 percent over June 2002. Sales of standalone DVD players increased by 29 percent to more than 2.1 million units for the month. The increases in DVD products have helped to boost the year-to-date totals as well. Through the end of second quarter 2003, total factory-to-dealer sales of TV/DVD combinations increased 279 percent to total 656,304 units. Year-to-date totals for standalone DVD players have increased more than 24 percent to some 7.86 million units.
