NCTA Launches HDTV Section On Web Site

31-Jul-03

The cable industry's ever increasing investment to create and deploy high-definition television content and services is now featured on a new HDTV section of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) Web site. The new HDTV section can be found by clicking on the ""Leading the Digital Revolution"" icon on NCTA's home page (www.ncta.com) or under the ""Broadband Services"" menu. Information that is now listed as part of the HDTV section includes: Cable Programming Networks: A list of the growing number of cable program networks that is producing HDTV content and a brief synopsis of the networks' high-definition strategy can be found here. HDTV Deployment: This page highlights national information about the deployment of HDTV service by cable operators and provides a summary of where the top Multiple System Operators have launched HDTV. Cable-Consumer Electronics Industry Agreement: This section provides an overview of the December 2002 ""plug-and-play"" agreement, currently pending federal review, designed to enable consumers to buy digital TVs that connect to digital cable without a set-top box and enjoy easy access to HDTV services. Virtual Press Kit: This NCTA-designed kit provides a comprehensive summary of the cable industry's HDTV activity including technical information, programming growth, and current developments. ""We've worked to make the new HDTV section of the Web site a clearinghouse to capture a variety of HDTV activity within the cable industry,"" said Rob Stoddard, Senior Vice President, Communications & Public Affairs. ""Requests for information have increased from people both within and outside of our industry as HDTV deployment picks up steam."" In addition to the HDTV section, the NCTA Web site also features a new Interactive Services section that highlights other new broadband services cable operators are providing to consumers. Services that are highlighted in the Interactive Services section include Digital Video Recorders (DVR), Video On Demand (VOD), Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD), Interactive Program Guides (IPG), and Enhanced TV Services. The Interactive Services section provides definitions of each of the services and a summary of the active launches and trails where the services are deployed. The Interactive Services section can also be found under the ""Broadband Services"" menu. A final new feature of the NCTA Web site is a new ""drop down"" menu system that provides easier navigation for visitors when surfing the site. The new drop down menu replaces an older ""fly-out"" menu style. NCTA is the principal trade association of the cable television industry in the United States. NCTA represents cable operators serving more than 90 percent of the nation's cable television households and more than 200 cable program networks, as well as equipment suppliers and providers of other services to the cable industry.
