Cablevision To Expand High-Definition Programming Slate

12-Dec-03

Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE: CVC) announced a significant expansion of its high-definition (HD) programming slate. By December 16, high-definition programming available to iO: Interactive Optimum digital cable customers will include Cinemax HD, STARZ! HD, The Movie Channel HD, and iN DEMAND's INHD. Cablevision's high-definition lineup already features WCBS-TV New York, Thirteen HD (PBS), WNYW-5 (FOX), MSG Network, Fox Sports Net New York, HBO and SHOWTIME. ""The availability of high-definition programming is becoming more important to our customers every day, and we have made HD a signature element of our iO: Interactive Optimum digital cable service,"" said Kristin Dolan, Cablevision's Senior Vice President of Digital Product Management. ""We are very happy with this expanded lineup of 11 HD channels, available to iO customers across our service area, and we expect this increasingly popular programming category will continue to grow."" Cablevision offers iO customers with high-definition television sets HD-capable converter boxes at no additional cost over standard analog or digital boxes. There is no additional charge for HD programming, provided customers subscribe to the standard-definition versions of the networks. In addition to its linear HD networks, Cablevision earlier this year became the nation's first cable provider to offer a high-definition video-on-demand service, which includes popular films and unique titles originally seen in IMAXÆ theatres that have never before been licensed for television. In some areas of Connecticut, new high-definition additions Cinemax HD and The Movie Channel HD will not be available until early next year. Cablevision provides cable service to nearly 3 million customers in the New York metropolitan area. By year-end, more than 900,000, or 30 percent of these cable customers will be iO: Interactive Optimum digital cable customers--up from 216,545, or 6.5 percent at the end of last year. iO offers customers access to more than 200 channels, including 50 premium movie channels, 45 channels of commercial-free digital music, more than 700 titles available on demand and other benefits.
