On2 Announces VP6 Support on Industry's Highest Performance Digital Media Processor

4-Feb-04

On2 Technologies announced that it has ported its VP6 video codec and TrueCast Player software to the Texas Instruments' DSP-based TMS320DM642 digital media processor. The software port enables devices containing the DM642 processor to stream and play high quality VP6-encoded content over an IP network. On2 and Texas Instruments showed VP6 video playing on the DM642 processor at the recent 2004 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Built on the high-performance architecture of TI's TMS320C64x DSP core, the DM642 brings expanded VP6 options to manufacturers of set top boxes, personal video recorders, and digital media receivers. TI's digital media processors deliver exceptional video quality with next-generation functionality. Its network of development partners and production-ready reference designs enables consumer electronics OEMs and networking equipment manufacturers to reduce design time, lower production costs, and bring products to market quickly. The DM642 was designed to address specifications of manufacturers of emerging video over IP applications. It features integrated high-definition video ports, a glueless interface to video system components, and multichannel audio along with the industry's highest level of performance and flexibility through full software programmability. The processor allows reduced system cost for video over IP applications through on-chip integration of key audio/video and connectivity peripherals. ìAdding VP6 and TrueCast support for the DM642 is an important step for widening the adoption of VP6 and enabling manufacturers to rapidly develop low-cost video over IP devices,î said Douglas A. McIntyre, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of On2 Technologies. ìThe programmability, performance, and low cost of the DM642 will ensure their success in the consumer electronics market, and we look forward to sharing in that success with Texas Instruments.î For more information on Texas Instruments, please visit www.texasinstruments.com.
