U.S. Digital Television, Inc. (USDTV) announced a strategic partnership with Dotcast, an innovator in datacasting and wireless technologies, and Winegard Company, a leader in antenna product design and manufacturing, to develop a compact indoor/outdoor antenna that significantly improves digital and high-definition ""over-the-air"" reception. USDTV's new service, introduced in January, is the first in the United States to broadcast local, national, and cable channels over-the-air in a digital format, creating a new, cost-effective broadcasting medium.ìThis antenna will allow USDTV to provide subscribers in difficult reception areas with reliable, clear reception, and enables USDTV to substantially expand its potential customer base,î said Steve Lindsley, President and CEO of USDTV. ìThis partnership is another critical element in our efforts to create a national infrastructure for a quality, low-cost subscription TV service.îThe new antenna will be available to USDTV subscribers as a compact, 22-inch tube that can be unobtrusively mounted on a TV set or placed along a window sill, balcony railing, or edge of a roof. The ability to mount the antenna indoors or outdoors creates flexibility for subscriber needs. ìDotcastís engineers have created an enormously powerful, yet compact and affordable next-generation antenna aided by advances in semi-conductor technology developed for satellite communications systems,î said Leo Hoarty, Dotcast's Founder and Chief Technical Officer. ìWe are pleased that our antenna design will enhance the plug-and-play nature of the USDTV service platform.îDespite its compact size, the new antenna has reception capabilities that are better than a large, outdoor mast antenna with a six-foot span. In addition, the antenna will cover the entire frequency range from low VHF through UHF, which will give subscribers access to all digital broadcast channels. Based on Dotcast's patent-pending, low-noise amplifier system technology, the antenna provides omni-directional reception for markets with geographically separated transmitter sites, yet provides automated directional capability for difficult coverage areas. The new antenna system will be manufactured by Winegard Company.ìThis agreement with USDTV represents our first major initiative with Dotcast to introduce the next-generation of advanced digital antennas,î said Bob Howell, Director of Distribution Systems/Off-Air Antenna Division for Winegard Company. ""The Dotcast engineers have designed a truly remarkable and unique technology. This innovative new technology has superior reception characteristics for such a small antenna system and is unlike anything the industry has seen to date.""
