CEA R7.5 Committee Issues White Paper On Power Management For A/V Network Capable Devices

27-Apr-04

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced that its R7.5 A/V Network Subcommittee has issued a white paper titled Power Management for A/V Network-Capable Devices. The document, available online at www.ce.org/energy, addresses the power management issues that relate to networked devices and discusses how the needs of devices change when they go from standalone products to being connected in a networked environment. The paper defines relative levels of power consumption for a networked device and examines the network-related functions of a device that affect power consumption. It also includes recommendations on the power handling requirements for devices to support network operations, including modes of operation, power consumption limits under various conditions and device-to-device communications. ìThis white paper is an important analysis of network device power management,î said John Card, Chair of the R7.5 Workgroup that wrote the white paper and System Engineer at EchoStar Communications Corp. ìThe final report is the result of collaboration from a variety of participants with diverse backgrounds. It describes some of the issues that need to be solved to improve our customers' experiences with their interconnected home entertainment networks.î ìPower management currently focuses on devices which plug into a wall, such as TVs and PCs, not on devices that get power from each other and are networked together,î said Virginia Williams, Director of Technology and Policy at CEA. ìThis report makes recommendations on how to balance the efficiencies of these devices with the need for the various functions of an 'always on' network. Since audio/video technologies are helping set the pace for the rest of the industry, this white paper helps outline how we should define the power consumed by the network interface in each power state of a device.î For more information on the CEA, please visit www.ce.org.
