Genesis Introduces G6.1sr Surround Speaker

7-May-04

Genesis Advanced Technologies, manufacturer of legendary high-end two-channel audiophile loudspeaker systems, is now shipping the G6.1sr surround speaker: part of the Genesis 6.1 Absolute Surround 5.5 multi-channel loudspeaker system. The G6.1sr surround is a combination monopole / dipole speaker with a similar voice to the audiophile G6.1 loudspeaker system and G6.1c center channel. Designed with the same 6.5-inch aluminum mid-bass couplers/woofers, 5-inch titanium midrange and exclusive Genesis 1-inch circular ribbon tweeter as the rest of the Genesis surround system, the G6.1sr assures a consistent timbre throughout the surround matrix. ìWeíve provided a high-level speaker throughput for connection to our S2/12t subwooferî, explains Scott Garside, Product Manager. ìA fully configured Genesis Absolute Surround system is full-frequency in all five channels. The combination of G6.1sr surrounds and their accompanying S2/12t subwoofers plays from 16Hz - 36kHz.î G6.1srís drivers are configured as a front firing baffle and left & right side-firing facets in a hexagonal cabinet. ìThe G6.1sr is universally installer-friendlyî, states Dave Firestone, VP Sales & Marketing. ìIts unique shape and flexible mounting bracket system allows it to be placed on a side wall, rear wall or corner, and on any surface from dry-wall to concrete blocks. The G6.1sr can be switched from monopole to dipole and weíve provided the installer with a 12v relay for use with touch panels or wired remotes.î In order to achieve maximum performance as a monopole and dipole speaker, the G6.1sr is three separate speakers in a single cabinet. In monopole mode, a three-way crossover manages the tweeter, midrange and two side-firing mid-bass woofers. ìWhen itís switched to dipole mode, the G6.1sr uses two totally different crossoversî, explains Arnie Nudell, Genesis Chief Scientist. ìThe front face drivers are turned off, and the two tweeters on the side facets are turned on. One of the side facets is a 2-way speaker with a tweeter and a woofer. The other facet uses a unique phase-shifting crossover that powers the woofers in-phase at lower frequencies, but shifted 180 degrees out of phase from about 200Hz on up, including the tweeter, for proper dipole performance. We get the best of both worlds; diffuse and ephemeral sound for movie surround material, but with real low-end punch.î ìThe G6.1sr surround speaker is one of our most technically advanced systems and a real challenge to buildî, adds Bradley Sutton, Production Manager. ìWe pack over seven pounds of crossovers into each speaker and yet still maintain a relatively small package for wall mounting.î The G6.1sr surround speakers retail for $7,000 a pair, with optional wood and automotive finishes for slightly more, and are available through authorized Genesis dealers and distributors worldwide. S2/12t surround subwoofers retail for $2,700 each in satin black, or $3,100 for standard and custom automotive finishes.
