The 2005 Grammy Awards will include for the first time a new award for Surround Sound releases. The award was approved at a recent meeting of the Board of Directors of the Recording Academy and was one of three new award categories that will debut during the 2005 Awards event to be held next February.According to a statement from the Recording Academy, ""An entirely new Grammy Award field titled Production, Surround Sound, was ratified, along with its first category Best Surround Sound Album (all genres included; for commercial releases on DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, or SA-CD providing an original surround mix of four or more channels. The award will go to the Surround Remix Engineer, Surround Producer [if any], and Surround Mastering Engineer [if any]).""Also worth noting is the creation of Surround Sound Production as a new Grammy Award ""field."" This suggests that in future years, we may see additional award categories added to this field beyond the initial award category of Best Surround Sound Album. It's encouraging to see the Recording Academy give Surround Sound and high resolution audio some recognition. We'll watch with interest as the dates approach for the first ever nominations in this new Grammy Award category.
