The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the MultiBand OFDM Alliance (MBOA) announced that the 2005 International CES, scheduled for January 6-9, 2005, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA will include the MBOA Ultrawideband (UWB) TechZone in its Innovations Plus exhibit area in the CES Central Plaza. ""CES is the place to see the year's hottest new technologies, and it doesn't get any hotter than the MBOA Ultrawideband TechZone,"" said Karen Chupka, Vice President of Events and Conferences at CEA. ""With consumer demand for faster home networking and wireless connectivity soaring, it will be exciting to see the consumer applications of ultrawideband come to life at CES."" ""The true promise and potential reality for ultrawideband is its cross-category acceptance as a cable replacement solution,"" said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst for Parks Associates. ""Its true measure of success, projected to number more than 180 million nodes shipped in five years, will be the continued support and deployment by major players in the computing, consumer electronics, and mobile communications markets."" The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) is the producer of the International CES, the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow, and the MBOA is an industry organization dedicated to developing high-performance UWB technical specifications. MBOA's 150-plus member companies include many of the most influential players in the consumer electronics, personal computing, home entertainment, mobile phone, semiconductor and digital imaging spaces. Collectively, these companies retain much of the world's expertise and experience in designing and building systems and silicon based upon UWB techniques. Among those companies exhibiting in the new TechZone will be General Atomics, Intel Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric, Philips Electronics, ST Microelectronics, Texas Instruments, Focus Enhancements, TDK, Taiyo Yuden R & D of America, as well as start-up UWB companies including Artimi, Alereon, CommStack, Orangeware, Staccato Communications, WiQuest and Wisair. The TechZone will also include strategic industry organizations that comprise the UWB ecosystem, including the WiMedia Alliance, the Wireless USB Promoters Group and the 1394 Trade Association. ""MBOA's participation at CES is notable because it is the first time we will be able to show how this exciting technology fits into the world of consumer electronics,"" said Mark Fidler, Senior Engineering Scientist, Hewlett Packard, and MBOA steering committee member. ""MBOA UWB has wide industry support and will enable consumer electronics companies to deliver real-time high-performance wireless solutions for use at home, in the enterprise and on the go."" Ultrawideband (UWB) is a wireless communications scheme that operates in a newly allocated unlicensed spectrum. Advantages of UWB include low power consumption, very low cost/complexity yet high throughput (480Mbps) and precision location capability. The specifications for UWB target emerging wireless personal area network (WPAN) communications. WPAN technology enables high-speed, short-range, cable-free connectivity for a wide array of multimedia consumer electronics, PC peripherals and mobile devices.
