Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) President and CEO Gary Shapiro released the following statement in response to the Senate Commerce Committee vote in favor of S. 2644, the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Rural Consumer Access to Digital Tele-vision Act of 2004, drafted by Sen. John Ensign (R-NV). S. 2644 allows digital broad-cast satellite (DBS) providers to offer a network high definition television (HDTV) feed to consumers who are unable to receive their broadcasters' digital signal. ""Millions of rural Americans just moved one step closer to making the analog-to-digital television (DTV) transition. CEA commends Chairman McCain, Senator Ensign, and the Senate Commerce Committee for recognizing the importance of delivering HDTV to all American's living rooms. By allowing satellite providers to step in and transmit networks' high-definition television programs to areas not served by broadcasters, the entire country's move to a digital world is advanced. With this bill everybody wins - consumers reap the benefits of HDTV, broadcasters are spurred to provide a full-power DTV signal and we all benefit from the expedited return of the analog spectrum.""For more information about CEA, please visit www.cea.org.
