Mitsubishi Rayon To Demonstrate 1394 Over Plastic Optical Fiber For Home Networking At POFTO CEDIA Booth Number 2020

23-Jul-04

Mitsubishi Rayon, the World's largest supplier of Plastic optical Fiber, will demonstrate a new product using Plastic Optical Fiber (POF). The product is a POF data link which carries 1394 protocol and has been designed for digital home networking applications. Plastic Optical fibers have been around for some time but have only recently started to come into their own, driven by the automobile manufacturers in Europe. As the number of electronic devices in the auto have increased exponentially, the European auto manufactures, led by Daimler Benz, have decided to interconnect these devices by a plastic optical Bus. They developed a standard called"" Most"" against which all suppliers are buying against. This has had the effect of driving POF components prices through the floor. By the end of 2004, there will be 16 models of European cars with plastic optical data buses consisting of 15 million optical nodes which are growing at 40-percent per year. This is just for the European cars; the American and Japanese are expected to adopt optical data buses between 2005 and 2010. The IDB-1394 standard, being developed for U.S. and Japanese autos, will have a convenience port where consumer electronics from the home can be plugged in. These developments in the auto field are bound to have dramatic effect on the Home networking market for POF. For more information, please visit www.pofto.com or www.igigroup.com.
