CBS Sports To Show The 86th PGA Championship In HDTV For First Time; CBS Sports Will Provide Coverage Of The Third And Final Rounds Of The 86th PGA Championship In HDTV

CBS Sports announced that it will broadcast the 2004 PGA Championship in HDTV for the first time. Argent Mortgage Company, LLC, will sponsor the HDTV broadcasts of the PGA Championship. CBS Sports will present 18 hole-coverage of the third and final rounds of the PGA Championship in HDTV on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14-15, 2004, live from Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. CBS Sports' PGA Championship HDTV broadcasts will feature the highest-definition television format, 1080i resolution, and 5.1-channel digital surround sound. The unified productions for the SD and HD telecasts will feature the same announcers, camera angles, replays, and graphics. CBS Sports is the industry leader in HDTV broadcasts. In 2004, CBS Sports, will broadcast 39 weekends of premier event sports programming in high-definition, including an unprecedented 10 PGA Tour events. Historically, CBS Sports' coverage of the 2000 Masters was the first golf tournament ever presented live in HDTV on network television. CBS Sports also presented the first HDTV broadcast of a PGA Tour event at the 2001 Sony Open. For the last five years, CBS has aired HD productions of the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four and Championship Games, the Masters, college football, and the U.S. Open Tennis Championships. CBS also broadcast the 2001 and 2004 Super Bowls and all of the 2003 and 2004 AFC Playoffs in HDTV. CBS Sports was responsible for the first broadcast of a professional football game in high-definition format on Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, when the historic broadcast featured the AFC East Division co-leaders, the Buffalo Bills against the New York Jets. The game was the first of four high definition games presented by CBS Sports during the 1998 season. CBS broadcasts, on average, 25 hours per week of High-Definition programming, more than any other broadcast network, and more original HD programming per week than any other network, broadcast or cable or satellite. One hundred and seventy-nine of CBS's owned and affiliated stations are currently broadcasting in digital, covering approximately 97-percent of the nation.
