Leading Video IC Producers To Discuss HDTV Challenges And Opportunities At HDTV Forum 2004

19-Aug-04

The top names in video ICs for DVD players, digital CRTs, LCD TVs, PDP TVs, RPTVs, STBs and projectors will present at the upcoming HDTV Forum 2004, organized by Insight Media-the leading source for information on the microdisplay industry, and DisplaySearch-the worldwide leader in flat panel display (FPD) market research and consulting. Leaders throughout the TV food chain are participating in the three-day event, which will take place at the luxurious Westin Century Plaza in Los Angeles, California from August 24 to August 26, 2004. The Display Electronics session, which is from 8:30AM to 12:10PM on August 26, 2004 features several top names in video ICs, a leading financial analyst covering this segment, and an award-winning engineering director at a prominent TV brand who has evaluated most of the solutions on the market. It is becoming increasingly evident that the selection of the image processing electronics is one of the most important parts of the design decision as there will be a dramatic difference in the on-screen performance - even with the rest of the system being identical. With eight speakers representing suppliers, analysts and customers, it should be one of the most interesting sessions. This session intends to quantify the HDTV opportunity; discuss requirements for acceptable performance; identify challenges in single chip integration; determine what additional features are likely to be integrated; and to discuss how long this segment can prevent commoditization. Leading this session and moderating the panel session is one of the most prominent figures in video ICs today, Dr. Nikhil Balram. Dr. Balram, currently CTO of National Semiconductors' Display Electronics Business Unit, has 17 years of experience in video processing. He is most well known for bringing Faroudja's award-winning video processing technology to the masses, conceiving and launching the highly successful DCDi branding strategy, and co-creating Video2000, the first comprehensive PC video benchmark, whose test patterns are now used worldwide in the CE industry. In addition to National Semiconductor, Dr. Balram has held executive positions at SonicBlue, Genesis Microchip, Sage and Faroudja. Dr. Balram will provide an overview on the challenges and requirements of progressively scanned HDTV electronics. Other speakers include: Brian Alger, a well known video IC analyst at Pacific Growth Equities: Mr. Alger will try to quantify the HDTV electronics opportunity and handicap which companies are most likely to benefit from the HDTV transition and why. Mr. Alger has been named an All Star Analyst by the Wall Street Journal's ""Best on the Street Analyst"" survey, and currently covers 10 video IC manufacturers. He has also served as an electronics analyst at Preferred Capital Markets and Prudential Securities. John LeMoncheck, VP of CE Products, Silicon Image: A session on digital displays would not be complete without Silicon Image, the company that pioneered the development and commercialization of the dominant interface between digital devices. Mr. LeMoncheck will update the audience on the status and benefits of the HDMI standard, which is being widely implemented in the latest HDTVs, STBs and DVD players. Prior to joining Silicon Image, John held key positions at Teralogic, Arithmos, Lego, Synaptics and NCR. Neil Mitchell, Genesis Microchip VP of Marketing, TV Electronics: Mr. Mitchell is a newcomer to Genesis Microchip after over 15 years in video ICs at Zoran, TeraLogic, Philips Semiconductors and STMicroelectronics. As the leading scaler and deinterlacer supplier, Mr. Mitchell will outline Genesis Microchip's strategy and roadmap and progress toward one of the industry's lowest cost and highest performance single chip solutions. Dave Pederson, VP, Corporate Marketing & Co: GM, DTV Division, Zoran Corporation, will discuss the global digital explosion, display electronics technology drivers, trends in DTV electronics, and how Zoran is overcoming the challenges to creating a connected digital home, enriching the consumer's HDTV experience, and driving the digital lifestyle. Prior to joining Zoran in 2003, Mr. Pederson spent over seventeen years at National Semiconductor in various engineering, strategic marketing and management positions including Director of their Set Top Box product line. Gil Aharoni, Product Manager, DTV line, Oplus Technologies: Mr. Aharoni's presentation will review the various technical and marketing challenges facing display electronics developers and manufacturers in HDTV arena. He will also examine the integration path from multi-board to single chip solutions and Oplus' roadmap to single chip solutions. Mr. Aharoni is responsible for Oplus' iDTV reference design boards and single chip products, and he has more than 15 years high technology experience. Dennis Crespo, VP of Marketing, Silicon Optix: Mr. Crespo has 15 years of video IC experience at Silicon Optix, Arithmos, S3 and others. He will discuss Silicon Optix' unique solution for projection TVs. Atul Batra, Senior Director, Electrical Engineering, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America: Mr. Batra is responsible for CRT and microdisplay RPTV hardware and software development for the US market. He has received numerous awards from Mitsubishi in leading and directing their design teams and represents Mitsubishi in the ATSC and SCTE committees. Mr. Batra will discuss what are the key requirements for display electronics today and in the future and reveal some of the problems with current solutions. HDTV Forum 2004 will bring together the entire TV food chain including representatives from TV and cable networks, content creators, government agencies, satellite and cable providers, retailers, distributors, TV brands, TV OEMs, panel/tube/engine manufacturers and IC manufacturers. The much-anticipated event boasts 17 sessions and over 60 speakers. Keynotes include HDNet's Mark Cuban and ESPN's Bryan Burns.
