Dolby Laboratories announced that NBC will present selected events of the Athens Olympic Games (August 13-29, 2004) in Dolby Digital 5.1 to its customers with high-definition television service. For viewers watching the analog NTSC broadcast, the NBC presentation of the Games will include Dolby Pro Logic II. NBC will also be presenting select content from Athens in Dolby surround sound on USA Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, and Telemundo. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be presented in Dolby Digital 5.1, along with many of the most popular events, including track and field, gymnastics, and swimming. To receive Dolby Digital 5.1 audio in their home, viewers will need an over-the-air HDTV receiver, an HD cable, or HD satellite set-top box. For viewers who are not able to receive high-definition broadcasts, Dolby Pro Logic II will provide a five-channel surround sound experience over their existing setups. ""Viewers of NBC's HD broadcast will experience the intimacy and drama of the action through compelling Dolby Digital 5.1,"" said Tom Daily, Marketing Director, Professional Audio, Dolby Laboratories. ""We are honored to work with NBC to help provide the audio experience of the Olympic Games all the way from Athens."" Dolby Digital, the versatile audio technology from Dolby Laboratories, is the sound standard for virtually every new home entertainment and broadcast delivery format. With its ability to deliver mono, stereo, or up to 5.1 channels of superb audio quality, Dolby Digital is deployed worldwide for DVD and digital terrestrial, cable, and satellite broadcasting systems. Dolby Pro Logic II, which provides five full-range channels -- Left, Center, Right, Left Surround, and Right Surround -- produces a natural and involving surround experience delivered over any normal stereo feed. Pro Logic II is also fully backward-compatible with Dolby Surround Pro Logic technology, and can optimally decode the thousands of commercially available Dolby Surround movies and television shows with enhanced surround spatiality. To date, 40 million Dolby Digital and 15 million Dolby Pro Logic II home theater systems have been sold.
