CEA Announces Fall HDTV Updates With FCC Officials To Present At Several Meetings

16-Sep-04

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced its popular ""HDTV Update"" program will be conducted in five markets this fall to bring retailers, broadcasters and cable representatives up-to-date on the state of the analog to digital television (DTV) transition. The meetings provide a national perspective on where the transition is heading and give local parties an opportunity to discuss ways of working together to achieve greater consumer awareness of the best of DTV and high-definition television (HDTV). The five markets, selected based on a strong retail HDTV presence as well as cable HDTV activity, are Chicago (September 27), Newark (October 5), San Francisco (October 20), Los Angeles (October 21) and New York City (November 10). During these industry breakfast meetings, CEA will share sales trends, consumer research and a policy update with attendees. Additionally, the Federal Communications Commission's Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau will present information at the San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago meetings. ""With more than 11 million DTV products in American homes, we are well beyond the early adopter phase of this transition,"" said Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of CEA. ""Today, new challenges face the industry in educating consumers about DTV, including the implementation of the DTV tuner mandate and the arrival of the digital cable ready (DCR) sets. Bringing together these parties at the local level will work towards reducing confusion and help to keep the momentum building."" In addition to hosting the HDTV update meetings, CEA also produces the monthly HDTV Update E-News to keep parties informed and up-to-date after the face-to-face meeting has occurred. Previous HDTV Update E-News editions are available on CEA's website at www.CE.org/hdtv. CEA's HDTV Update meetings are open to anyone in the retail, broadcast, cable and content or programming industries, involved in the HDTV transition.
