Apogee Technology, Inc. today introduced the DDXi-2101, the first fully integrated, all-digital, high power audio amplifier that includes a complete set of digital audio processing features. The DDXi-2101, jointly designed under the terms of a development agreement with STMicroelectronics, combines Apogeeís patented DDXÆ amplification with an audio processor in a single IC. This one-chip solution reduces system cost, size and complexity by eliminating the need for a separate audio processor, digital to analog converter and amplifier chips. These benefits make the DDXi-2101 an good solution for Digital TVs, CD/DVD mini/micro systems, gaming systems, and multi-media speakers.ìIn 2000, Apogee introduced the worlds first all-digital amplifier DDX chip set, establishing a new paradigm of direct amplification of digital audio signals to preserve the quality of recordings such as CDs and DVDs,î said David Meyers Apogeeís Chief Operating Officer. ìWith the introduction of the DDXi-2101, Apogee and STMicroelectronics have achieved another first, a single chip audio amplification system that combines high power and digital processing capabilities. Consumer electronic manufacturers are now able to reduce product size and cost without sacrificing audio features or performance. With the release of this next generation audio amplifier solution, we believe that we have extended our leadership position in the marketplace by providing more functionality at lower cost for our customers.îThe DDXi-2101 (ìiî for integrated) combines a 2.1 channel DDX processor with a 50 watt per channel, high efficiency DDX power stage. The device includes volume, bass/treble, mixing, equalization, surround sound modes and many other features to enhance audio quality. In addition, the DDXi-2101 incorporates Apogeeís Automodeô technology, which reduces the time to develop full-featured audio products. The DDXi-2101 power outputs can be configured in either DDX stereo mode or in a 2.1 channel configuration to support products that include a separate subwoofer loudspeaker. For CD/DVD mini/micro-systems applications the device includes all standard preamplifier functions and preset equalizations to enhance playback of different music styles such as Jazz and Rock. For TV applications the device includes BBE sound enhancement to improve the sonic quality of small, low cost loudspeakers and BBE Viva to produce surround sound effects from two loudspeakers. The device also includes a preset nighttime listening mode so that movie audio playback can be fully appreciated at low listening levels. The deviceís wide operational voltage range (+9V to +36V) supports audio applications from 10 to 50 Watts per channel. The Company plans to release engineering samples of the DDXi-2101 in September along with an evaluation system. Production quantities are expected by the end of December.
