Since 1980, Telarc has been honored with 48 Grammy Awards for performance, production, and engineering. Other important awards have included the French Grand Prix du Disque and Diapason díOr; Japanís Record of the Year; Germanyís Audiophile CD of the Year and Gramophone Magazineís 2004 Label of the Year. Although it began as a classical-only recording company, Telarc now boasts a catalog of over 600 recordings, ranging from classical and classical-crossover to jazz, contemporary jazz, Americana, pop and blues. Telarc releases approximately fifty-five recordings each year, working with a notable roster of artists. ìTelarc releases about sixty records a year, so winning Grammys for more than 10 percent of the records we made last year is an unprecedented accomplishment for the label,î said Elaine Martone, senior vice president of artist relations and production at Telarc. ìAlso noteworthy is the broad field of categories in which we wonóclassical crossover, jazz instrumental, solo classical instrumental, engineering and choral performance.î Martone said the Grammys for the Berlioz and McCoy Tyner projects were especially gratifying, as she was the producer of both recordings. Celebrating their 15th Anniversary this year, Heads Up International has been successfully carving its niche in the world of contemporary instrumental music. In addition to consistently landing on Billboardís Contemporary Jazz, Traditional Jazz and World Music charts, and garnering numerous industry awardsóincluding Billboardís Contemporary Latin Jazz Album of the Year (Roberto Pereraís Dreams & Desires), the AFIMís Independent Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year (Pieces of a Dreamsí Loveís Silhouette), a Grammy nomination in 2004 (Yellowjacketsí Time Squared), JazzWeekís Radio Programmers Award (Jaco Pastorius Big Bandís Word of Mouth Revisited), and Gibson Guitarís Best Female Jazz Guitarist (Joyce Cooling)óHeads Up artists have regularly captured the #1 slot in national radio airplay. ìWe are so honored that the Academy would recognize Black Mambazo, and we are hopeful that this Grammy will shine a bright spotlight on the music and people of South Africa,î says Heads Up President Dave Love. ìCoinciding with the ten-year anniversary of the demise of apartheid makes it that much more special.î South African President Thabo Mbeki said, ìThe Grammy Award that has been so spectacularly won by Ladysmith Black Mambazo makes us all proud to be South Africans. The people and government of South Africa salute this remarkable group on their achievement and wish them continuing success in the future.î MCG Jazz is a division of Manchester Craftsmenís Guild, a multi-discipline, minority-directed center dedicated to fostering a sense of creative, intellectual and economic empowerment and growth among disadvantaged people in urban communities.
