The promise of advanced performance home entertainment on a flat-screen viewing area was on display at the CEDIA Expo í99, September 24-26, in the form of the ProScan brand PSP4200 plasma display monitor. Offering a virtual living wall of entertainment, the PSP4200 from Thomson Consumer Electronics offers color images so real they appear to literally jump off the screen and is designed as the centerpiece of an advanced home entertainment systems or for commercial application wherever high-resolution displays are required. ""The rectangular shape of the plasma screen reflects the panorama of widescreen movie as well as Digital High Definition TV programming,"" said Michael Shultx, General Manager, TV Product Management. ""The slim profile (four inches deep) and relatively light weight of this cutting edge product makes it easy to install and is even capable of hanging on a wall or for built-in application."" The display area of the PSP4200 is virtually all-screen with the viewing area outlined by a slim border designed to resemble a picture frame. The plasma monitor delivers deep, rich colors with 853x480-pixel resolution in 320 candelas brightness and 450-1 contrast ratio for lifelike picture performance. For maximum display capability, the monitor can be paired with the ProScan PSHD105 HDTV set-top converter to achieve digital quality video images from terrestrial broadcasts, or with the proper dish/antenna, from DirecTV Satellites. The monitor is Digital TV compatible with 720p and 1080i input resolution. The flat screen and four-inch depth of the monitor make it ideal for in-wall home entertainment systems or for commercial locations such as messaging center for airport terminals, hospitals, hotels, business conference rooms, and other areas where large groups congregate. The computer input range of the monitor VGA, SVGA, XGA and SCGA ñ makes it equally impressive a large-screen computer monitor for displaying text and graphics in a classroom or business environment since plasma technology assures constant picture geometry even in larger and wider screen sizes. For home use, conveniently located input jacks -including composite S-Video Component Video (Y, Pr, Pb), and RGB simplify the connection of audio/video components. A built-in stereo amplifier completes the formula for creating an authentic home theater experience. Whatever the subject- movies video games, personal recordings ñthe plasma monitor delivers new dimension in entertainment. Plasma utilizes rare gases contained in minute pockets sandwiched between two thin glass panels. Embedded in the panels are perpendicular columns of electrodes. A high voltage is applied to the facing sets of electrodes to generate an electrical discharge that, in turn, causes the gases to emit ultra-violet rays. The rays excite red, green, and blue phosphors coating the bottom of the panel to produce colors that appear on the screen. The resulting display is a very flat array of individually addressable pixels, providing for precise image control and eliminating the depth requirements of a conventional CRT (cathode ray tube) color TV picture tube. The combination of a flat surface with light distributed over the entire screen creates a viewing angle of approximately 16 degrees, providing ideal viewing from any angle.
