Matsushita To Compete With Sony In HDTV Broadcast Equipment

OSAKA - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co will start marketing next March the DVCPRO HD series of broadcasting equipment that conforms to the high-definition broadcast standard used in Japan, the US and Europe, company officials said. It aims to catch up with Sony Corp., which has been marketing similar equipment, by featuring prices about 40 percent lower than those of its rival. Within three years, Matsushita aims to obtain a 40 percent share of the global market for broadcasting equipment, estimated to be worth 3 trillion yen (US$29.4 billion) over the next 10 years.
