Miller & Kreisel Sound Introduces S-150P THX Powered Speaker

180-Watt Active Speaker Offers Advanced Sonic Benefits Of Bi-Amplification

Miller & Kreisel Sound (M&K) has brought the dramatic sonic benefits of active biamplification to the advanced speaker design of its highly acclaimed S-150 THX to create the S-150P THX ($1,699), the company's first powered satellite speaker for home theatres. With increased clarity and detail, as well as wider dynamic range and greater output capability, the S-150P THX is designed to serve as the ultimate main speaker in any audio system. This THX UltraÆ certified product is based on M&K Professional's reference 2510P powered monitor. The speaker actually incorporates two identical internal amplifiers: one driving only the tweeters; the other, only the woofers. These symmetrical discrete bipolar amplifiers use 1% metal-film resistors and polypropylene capacitors for the best possible sonics. The usual biamplified speaker design approach uses a smaller amplifier for the tweeters than the woofers. However, M&K's unique design, with a total power rating (to FTC requirements) of 180 watts continuous (at less than .01%THD + Noise) allows each amplifier to deliver up to 180 watts, depending on the input signal. For example, if there are no low frequencies present, the woofer amplifier can deliver the full 180 Watts. The speaker's acoustic frequency response is 80 Hz - 20KHz + 2 dB. By using two amplifiers, each handling part of the audio spectrum, means the S-150P THX delivers a significant increase in clarity and detail, due to lower intermodulation distortion and an improved amplifier damping factor. Wider dynamic range and greater output is achieved by eliminating the passive crossover network and eradicating losses due to long speaker wire runs from the amplifier to the loudspeaker. The speaker incorporates both balanced (XLR or 1/4"") and unbalanced (RCA jack) inputs, as well as a pass-through for feeding additional speakers or a subwoofer. Using balanced cables allows for noise-free long runs of cable such as may be required for custom installation work. Other features include a switchable electronic 80Hz second-order Linkwitz-Riley High Pass filter (which forms a fourth-order filter in combination with the speaker's acoustic rolloff) and a selectable level control with variable and fixed (THX) settings. Other performance enhancements include M&K's exclusive Active Phase-Focused crossover, developed specifically for the S-150P THX speaker. The design improves performance over conventional designs by optimizing more than just the speaker's on-axis response to give a very smooth response over a wide horizontal and vertical listening window. The unique Active Phase-Focused crossover concept assures accurate speaker response in both time and frequency domains at a very wide range of angles in both the vertical and horizontal planes, optimizing the speaker's three-dimensional response improving its on-axis sound. These benefits are particularly important for multichannel playback systems because it means that listener located anywhere in the room will hear superior imaging and sound quality with exceptional clarity both on and off axis. The S-150P THX utilizes three 1-inch fabric-dome Transmission Line tweeters that utilize Ferrofluid for maximum power handling and dynamic range. Two M&K reference-quality 5.25-inch polypropylene drivers are also used, and they feature exceptionally low distortion characteristics and extraordinary dynamic range and output capability. All drivers are fully magnetically shielded for use near television monitors. The S-150P THX, with its stylish black bead finish and black grille, measures 12 ñ1/2-inch H x 10 ¨1/2-inch W x 16-inch D and weighs 45 lbs. About M&K Headquartered in Culver City, California, M&K has been a pioneering leader in the fields of high-end loudspeakers and subwoofers for the home and studio environments and both analog and digital audiophile recording since 1974.
