SkyTune And NewCurve To Develop A Digital Television Datacasting Receiver Reference Design

SkyTune Corporation and NewCurve, Inc. today announced they have signed a joint agreement to develop a Digital Television (DTV) Datacasting Receiver reference design. The entertainment-centric device will enable new broadcast entertainment applications such as digital music and interactive advertising and offer Digital TV viewing at a mass market price point. The platform will conform to the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) and Advanced Television Enhancement Forum (ATVEF) specifications for datacasting and interactive applications. By combining SkyTune's SKY2201 ATSC 8-VSB receiver and NewCurve's client/server applications for media caching, broadcasters and consumers will be able to utilize this entertainment appliance to create new classes of entertainment applications beyond basic DVD players and Internet Browsers. Whether it's caching and playing back MP3 music or streaming video, the reference platform will provide a richer and more robust entertainment experience. ""This novel combination of intelligent caching and high integration should bring about new, exciting services for consumers and additional revenue sources for broadcasters and media companies,"" said Sean Badding of the Carmel Group. ""With FCC regulations forcing all broadcasting at a higher baud rate, broadcasters now have the opportunity to send a wide variety of signals to the television. ""The end result of this cooperation of SkyTune and NewCurve is that the broadcaster can now distribute a vast wealth of information other than just a TV signal, and the consumer can receive this signal without spending an exorbitant amount on a digitally enhanced television."" In the coming months, the companies plan to announce a roadmap for this reference design, which will include a technology demo and product availability. Source: SkyTune
