PSW1200Polk Audio, Inc. (Amex: PKA) has announced the introduction of the new PSW 1200 powered subwoofer. It features patented Polk Audio technologies and innovative features, such as full bass management functions, for outstanding home theatre and music performance. The PSW1200 features dual drivers mounted on opposing baffles. The drivers are 12-inch versions of those used in the legendary Polk Signature Reference Theater (SRT) system subwoofers. These drivers use oversized magnets, extremely rigid 1mm thick injection molded cones and 2-inch voice coils. The company says that special steps were taken to ensure that these powerful drivers would not excite panel resonance or shake the enclosure apart. The drivers are mounted on 1-1/2-inch thick MDF baffles; all other enclosure panels are braced 1-inch MDF.The system is vented via Polk Audioís patented Power Portô system that allows air exiting the port to slow gradually, thereby reducing air turbulence at the port mouth. Air turbulence wastes up to 3dB of bass energy and may produce audible chuffing noise and distortion. The system is driven by a built-in 350-watt high current amplifier that has a host of innovative convenience and performance features:- Built-in Bass Management - Bass management systems in processors and receivers are often limited in flexibility or ill documented. The PSW1200 has bass management functions, including:- All Channel Inputs - There are 7 low level input channels: left front, right front, center, subwoofer, LFE, left rear and right rear. This allows the user to feed the signal from any channel into the PSW1200 so that it can reproduce that channelís bass. There is never any question whether or not all the bass on the recording is getting to the subwoofer- Auto Movie Detect and Bass Boost - When the center channel input senses a signal, it automatically boosts the overall subwoofer level by 3dB- Switchable High Pass Filters - When passed through the PSW1200, main channel signals may be high pass filtered at either 40Hz or 80Hz (or not filtered at all) from both line or speaker level outputs- Defeatable Low Pass Filter - When using subwoofer processor outputs whose built-in low pass filter cannot be defeated, the low pass filter of the PSW1200 can be turned off to avoid interactions between them- Front Panel Volume Control- Continuously Variable Phase Control- Variable Low Pass Filter Frequency- Manual or Auto On/Off- Speaker Level InputsThe PSW1200 will be available in the U.S. in March 1999 at a suggested retailprice of $1,299.95PSW650Polk Audio also has announced the introduction of the new PSW650 powered subwoofer. The PSW650 features dual 10-inch drivers with 2-inch voice coils mounted on opposing 1-inch thick MDF baffles. The system is vented via twin Power Ports mounted on the rear (amplifier side) panel. The system is driven by a built-in 250-watt high current amplifier that has a host of convenience and performance features:- High Pass Filters - When passed through the PSW650, main channel signals may be high pass filtered at either 40H2 or 80H2 (or not filtered at all) from both line or speaker level outputs- Defeatable Low Pass Filter - When using subwoofer processor output whose built-in low pass filter cannot be defeated, the low pass filter of the PSW650 can be turned off to avoid interactions between filters- Front Panel Volume Control- Continuous Variable Phase Control- Variable Low Pass Filter Frequency- Manual Or Auto On/Off- Speaker Level InputsThe PSW650 will be available in the U.S. in March 1999 at a suggested retail price of $699.95.
