Broadband Consumer Market To Reach 24 Million Subscribers In The U.S. By 2004

A newly released report from Parks Associates projects that the broadband consumer market will reach 24 million subscribers by the end of 2004. The report, entitled Computing, Internet Service, and Broadband Access @ Home, provides a comprehensive analysis of three interrelated topics: home computing, residential Internet service, and broadband access in the US consumer market. Highlights from the report include the following: Household PC penetration will reach 56 percent by the end of 1999 and 71 percent by 2004; multi-PC penetration rate is expected to jump from 18% in 1999 to 34 percent in 2004. Household Internet penetration will reach 67 percent by 2004, a 72 percent increase from 1999ís penetration rate of 39 percent. At the end of September 1999, more than 1.3 million US households subscribed to some type of broadband Internet services (cable modem service, DSL, satellite-based Internet access, and broadband fixed wireless), with cable modem service claiming about 1 million subscribers (excluding Canadian cable modem customers). Broadband Internet services will claim a subscriber base of more than 24 million by the end of 2004, accounting for 34 percent of all online households but 50 percent of residential Internet access revenues. Cable modems, DSL, and satellite/wireless will claim 47 percent, 45 percent, and 8 percent, respectively, of the 24 million residential broadband subscriber base. Hongjun Li, Director of Research and author of the report, says that the proliferation of computers and Internet services in the consumer market will fundamentally change the way Americans live in the new millenium and provide unparalleled new business opportunities for service providers as well as equipment manufacturers. ""However,"" Mr. Li warns, ""there are too many players competing for increasingly squeezed margins in the consumer market. Technology alone is no guarantee of success. The key to survival and prosperity includes a combination of quick responsiveness to market dynamics, innovative marketing, and operational excellence.""
