Atlantic Technologyís New 1999 Systems

Atlantic Technology is preparing to introduce several new in-wall and bookshelf home theatre speaker systems that the company showed at the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES). New THXÆ-certified in-wall surround speakers recently began shipping to dealers. In 1999, Atlantic will introduce its first complete in-wall home theatre speaker systems. Prototypes of these systems were on display at the CES and attracted considerable interest from mid-market and high-end custom installers. Among the most interesting features are a modular in-wall baffle system, into which can be installed driver modules and crossovers for the front and center speakers and subwoofer. Atlantic Technology also showed a prototype of a modestly priced six-piece home theatre speaker system that will offer the companyís signature sound quality at a target price of under $1,400. With the preliminary designation, System 170, it reflects Atlanticís Total System Integrated Design philosophy of developing exceptional performance and value and reproducing music and movies with aplomb.Atlanticís new 370 IN-SR in-wall system is a THX Ultra certified dipole surround sound speaker with a fully sealed enclosure. While the backs of most in-wall speakers are open to the space between the walls, the 370 IN-SR has a sealed cabinet. This, the company says, essentially eliminates the unwanted transmission of sound to adjacent wall surfaces and the potentially detrimental acoustic effects of using unenclosed drivers in a wall. The 370 IN-SRís included hardware and mounting bezel permits recessing into a wall with the driver section raised just enough above the wall to produce a broad, diffuse dipolar sound field. To overcome dipole bass cancellation, Atlanticís Frequency Enhanced Dipole configuration uses an offset internal partition. This is said to give one side of the system a much larger enclosure volume and a smooth bass response down to 80 Hz, while the other side is rolled off below 200 Hz. The Atlantic Technology 370 IN-SR surround speakers are designed for use with the companyís System 370- and System 450-THX Ultra or any other high quality surround sound system. The 370 IN-SR is available now with a suggested retail price of $799 per pair - much less than comparable THX in-walls.The new Atlantic Technology 370 IN-SR THX-certified in-wall surround speaker will soon be joined by the 274T, a redesigned in-wall surround system 270.
