Sony To Open Direct Online Sales Of Audio Products

Sony Electronics has reportedly begun to talk openly about its plans to sell consumer electronics, audio, possibly even professional audio equipment direct to consumers on the Web. Late last year, Sony authorized six online retailers, including Hifi.com, Crutchfield Online, and ABT Electronics, to sell Sony audio products online. Now, Sony Electronics President Teruaki Aoki has begun speaking openly about the company's plans to sell direct to consumers, bypassing the retail supply chain. While acknowledging that traditional retailers are opposed to this move, Aoki says ""we cannot neglect the customers' viewpoint. We have to be prepared for that."" Industry speculation suggests that Sony's move may prod other large manufacturers to follow suit.
