International Fans Make ""Phantom"" No. 2 On All-Time Boxoffice List

The Force continued to be with 20th Century Fox's ""Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace"" as the prequel claims the second-highest worldwide theatrical boxoffice gross of all time with receipts totaling $922.5 million to date. The worldwide boxoffice for ""Phantom"" vaulted ahead of Universal's ""Jurassic Park"" (1993), which falls to No. 3 with a worldwide gross of $920 million. ""Titanic,"" co-financed by Fox and Paramount, leads with $1.8 billion worldwide - almost equal to the combined worldwide grosses of ""Phantom"" and ""Jurassic Park."" Despite the international success of recent film releases, there are no immediate challenges to the second and third spots on the worldwide boxoffice list. The fourth highest-grossing film worldwide is Fox's ""Independence Day"" (1996) with $811.4 million, followed by Fox's original ""Star Wars"" (1977) with $775.8 million. The biggest part of ""Phantom's"" worldwide boxoffice total came, not surprisingly, from the international markets. The domestic total for the sci-fi megahit is $431.1 million, compared with an international cumulation of $491.4 million.
