Video Over DSL Services To Move Beyond Trials

Video over DSL will be the next DSL adoption wave, following on the heels of Voice over DSL and high-speed Internet access, according to market research firm Cahners In-Stat Group. In-Stat cites the advantages of bundled service discounts, the necessity of only one set top box and the robustness and security of high-speed DSL Internet access, as factors that will compel 23 million households worldwide to subscribe to Video over DSL by 2005. ""Multiple approaches and a lack of standards are currently holding Video over DSL deployment to a trickle, but the damn will burst,"" said Michelle Abraham, Senior Analyst covering Multimedia Broadband Services. She continued, ""Telecom deregulation will compel nearly all telcos to look at Video over DSL."" Cahners In-Stat Group research also found: - The arrival of standards and competitive pressures on telcos (telephone companies) will cause the number of residences passed by video over DSL services to reach 75 million by 2005. - Multiple Dwelling Units (MDU) will represent an important early market segment, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. - Video services are becoming increasingly important to telcos, as they move to compete head-to-head with cable operators for data, voice and video services. - The emergence of Video over DSL will enable yet another option for consumers in their choice among terrestrial, cable and satellite television. Continuing its comprehensive coverage of the DSL marketplace, In-Stat released the report ""Video Over DSL: Beyond the Trial Phase?,"" No. MB0002VS. The report examines Video over DSL deployments around the world and forecasts homes passed, subscribers and service revenues by geographic region. The report also identifies current market barriers, status of current trials, and pioneering equipment providers.
