The results are in from The 71st Annual Academy AwardsÆ. Shakespeare In Love took home top honors with wins for Best Picture, Actress, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Costume Design, Comedy Score, and Art Direction. Steven Spielberg won Best Director for Saving Private Ryan (whichwon four other awards, mostly technical). Roberto Benigni, who won an expected Oscar for Best Foreign Film also won an unexpected Oscar for Best Actor in Life Is Beautiful. The excitable Italian claimed to have ""used up all my English"" but still managed to delightfully nattier on at length, as did GwynethPaltrow, who gave a tearful acceptance speech for her Best Actress Oscar award.Oscar-watchers anxiously awaited the presentation of Elia KazanísHonorary Lifetime Achievement Award, to see if a planned protest would come off (a group of organizers, angry at such an award being given to a namer of names during the blacklist era, had encouraged Oscar attendees to refuse to applaud). But with the exception of a few (Nick Nolte and Ed Harris among them), the frail-looking Kazan received a warm welcome. The big looser of the evening was The Thin Red Line (no awards, and director/producer Terrence Malick didnít show up).The complete list of winners and nominees follows:Best Picture Shakespeare in LoveNominees: Elizabeth Life Is Beautiful Saving Private Ryan Shakespeare In Love The Thin Red LineBest Directing Steven Spielberg - Saving Private RyanNominees: Life Is Beautiful Saving Private Ryan Shakespeare In Love The Thin Red Line The Truman ShowBest Screenplay - Original Marc Norman & Tom Stoppard - Shakespeare In LoveNominees: Warren Beatty & Jeremy Pikser - Bulworth Vincenzo Cerami & Roberto Benigni - Life Is Beautiful Robert Rodat - Saving Private Ryan Marc Norman & Tom Stoppard - Shakespeare In Love Andrew Niccol - The Truman ShowBest Screenplay - Adaptation Bill Condon - Gods And MonstersNominees: Bill Condon - Gods And Monsters Scott Frank - Out Of Sight Elaine May - Primary Colors Scott B.
