DVD-Video Player Sales Finish Strong For 1998

Industry support and aggressive marketing have increased consumer awareness for DVD-Video throughout 1998. As a result, DVD-Video has enjoyed tremendous success. For the week ending December 18,1998, the Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association (CEMA) reports that 46,322 DVD-Video players were sold to retailers, an impressive 353 percent (+36,091) over 1997ís corresponding weekly figure of 10,231. This marks the fifth consecutive week with 41,000+ DVD-Video player sales. Month-to-date sales increased 438 percent (+106,422) over 1997ís corresponding figure of 24,318, bring year-to-date DVD-Video player sales to retailers to 986,496 - a 198 percent increase over 1997ís corresponding year-to-date figure of 331,225. From launch to date the total number of DVD-Video players sales to retailers is 1,333,496 units. This translates to roughly 60 percent or 800,000 DVD-Video players sold through to U.S. household consumers.
