DirecTV To Launch Another HD Channel

DirecTV announced that a second channel dedicated to high-definition programming will be added to the service around May 1999. The company also will launch a fourth high-power satellite mid-year. The HD channel will feature titles from New Line Cinema, the first studio to license movie titles for pay-per-view in high-definition. DirecTV also is partnering with Philips Electronics and TiVo on a set-top box with built-in DirecTV satellite receiver, which will be offered through Philipís Personal TV lineup of products later in the year. Personal TV is an umbrella term for products that allow consumers to tailor programming to their own preferences. TiVo developed the core technology for the set-top box.
