DreamWorks is preparing to make a formal announcement of its plans to release their theatrical features on DVD in the DTSÆ Digital Surround format. Titles to be included are of the currently in-release DVDs such as The Peacemaker, Mouse Hunt, Amistad, Antz, and future releases such as Saving Private Ryan. This was always expected as DreamWorks SKG co-owner Steven Spielberg (the ""S"" in SKG) was the first filmmaker to support DTS and subsequently became an investor as well.Further, Universal Studios Home Video, which also has an ownership stake in Digital Theater Systems, according to sources, will be including supplemental features in future DVDs released in DTS Digital Surround that are included on DolbyÆ Digital DVDs. The division also is implementing a plan to significantly reduce the time following DVD Dolby Digital releases for the release of the same title in DTS Digital Surround. Of course, the best policy would be to issue both digital audio formats on the same DVD or at minimum day-and-date with each other. Universal needs to addresses the disparity in pricing and make their DTS Digital Surround DVDs the same lower price as their Dolby Digital DVDs. In related news, Digital Theater Systems expects 102 DTS-encoded CDs to be available and 32 DVDs, up from a current 20 DVD titles available from Universal Studios Home Video, Image Entertainment and DVD Ltd. Rykodisc is distributing DTS-encoded CDs only.
