""DVD Music Breakthrough""

DVD Music Breakthrough, an all-music DVD program, has been released by Delos International. The program offers over 93 minutes of music recorded in Delosí Virtual Reality Recording (VR2) process. The DVD menu alows the listener to choose either of two audio playback modes: 5-channel discrete playback in Dolby Digital or normal stereo playback in Dolby Surround. John Eargle, Delos Director of Recording and Chief Recording Engineer, comments on each music track, identifying for the listener particular characteristics of the recording venues and musical textures. In his introduction, Eargle says: ""Delosí investment in the future of home audio was set on its present course about three years ago when we developed VR2 (Virtual Reality Recording), a technique of recording up to four stereo program pairs with the intent of mixing them into discrete surround sound for the consumer. Delosí VR2 stereo recordings are encoded during the sessions and are intended to present a surround sound effect when played back over Dolby Stereo decoders. Now, with the advent of the DVD, we can present these programs in a more realistic discrete five-channel form. ""Our earlier DVD collaboration with Dolby Laboratories included the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in a stunning version of Tchaikovskyís ""1812 Overture"" that remains the most popular classical program available in surround sound. With this new release we are presenting a far wider palette of music and recording techniques in surround sound. ""The recordings are all of the direct-ambient kind; the front three channels convey a sonic picture of the performance stage while the two surround channels convey spatial information that identifies the performance space. Depending on your room setup and your tastes, you may wish to increase or decrease the level of the surround channels. ""The inclusion of a center channel in stereo presentation is something of a breakthrough for home music listening. Essentially, it means that the so-called stereo ""sweet spot"" is no longer a concern; you can sit virtually anywhere in your listening room and hear a cohesive and spatially correct representation of the recording stage itself, while the surround channels, derived from microphones in the house, contribute the ambience of the hall, heightening the listening effect al the more. ""As this recording is played, we will be providing on-screen comments regarding the performance, venue, and the recording techniques we used to capture the sense of space. Sit back and prepare to be transported into some of the worldís best recording venues!"" Delos will follow DVD Music Breakthrough with two additional music DVD releases during the next three months. DVD Space Spectacular, featuring Holstís ""The Planets"" and Straussí ""Thus Spake Zarathustra,"" with conductor Andrew Litton and the Dallas Symphony, is scheduled for June release. DVD Fantastic Symphony, due out in August, offers Berliozí ""Symphonie Fantastique"" and ""Romeo And Juliet Suite,"" in addition to Mussorgskyís ""Dream Of The Peasant Gritzko,"" ""Pictures At An Exhibition,"" and two interludes from Kovanshchina, all with Zdenek Macal and the New Jersey Symphony.
