Faroudja, Inc. has announced that the CBS Television Stations Division has purchased Faroudja Digital Format Translatorô (DFT) upconverters as integral components of its second wave of DTV station rollouts. The CBS Television Stations Division is a unit of CBS Corporation.""The CBS Engineering Lab conducted exhaustive tests on all available upconverters, evaluating both objective and aesthetic criteria, before selecting the Faroudja DFT,"" said Paul Puccio, CBS Vice President of Operations and Engineering. ""CBSí decision is a validation of the DFTís superior performance,"" said Glen Sakata, General Manager of Faroudjaís Broadcast Group. Mr. Sakata added, ""We are very pleased that the DFT, whose key function is to upconvert a video signal to HDTV quality, performed to CBSí exacting requirements. It will enable CBS to showcase its NTSC product to its best advantage by upconverting it to HDTV.""At the outset, CBS Owned stations WBBM-Chicago, WBZ-Boston, and WJW-Detroit, scheduled to rollout their digital services this May, will use DFTs to translate archived programs, promotional material, news packages and live events to the new Advance Television System Committee (""ATSC"") 1080 interlace format. The DFT allows these stations to us their existing broadcast playback and systems infrastructure. Each DFT will be configured with integrated NTSC Decoders, Digital Noise Reduction, and Advanced Video Detail Enhancement controls. Included are Faroudjaís patented motion algorithms to automatically optimize images from the wide variety of material originated in film, video or multiple layers of each. The CBS announcement follows similar recent decisions by Home Box Office and Fox Television Stations, Inc. to purchase DFTs for use in their rollout of digital television services. For more information contact Glen Sakata at 408 735 1492.
